AIRPORT SHUTTLE – Every visitor to Costa Rica faces the same obstacle; How to get to beautiful Manuel Antonio from the crowded, busy Airport in San Jose. There are normally just 3 options: Rent a car, take a small plane, or ride the crowded bus.

Rent a Car – Expensive, especially with current gas prices. In fact, a group of 8 with luggage would require two cars. Also, if you rent a car, be aware that in Costa Rica it is required by the government that you purchase insurance for your car rental. This can be as much as an additional $140 and is not provided on quotes.

Also, the roads can be a little tricky for the unfamiliar driver, and there have been some incidences of highway robbery.

Fly

Small, single engine plane, which while safe, is not like flying in a jet airliner

Expensive, costing over $600 for a group of 8.

Luggage is limited with extra charges for over weight bags

Flights are infrequent, with no flights after 4:30.

Flights can be canceled due to inclement weather.

Bus

While it is your cheapest alternative, it is crowded, with little leg room, and no air conditioning, which is not pleasant during the day.

Slow, with many stops, taking as long as 4 1/2 hours, except the express which only runs a couple of times a day, and still takes 4 hours.

The Bus does not leave from the airport, but rather from downtown San Jose, which is a half hour, $20 taxi ride, in the opposite direction from Manuel Antonio.
